Over the last couple of weeks its been a very introspective check for me as a Christian, Child of God of whom I trust and where I get my information regarding Jesus, what is right and wrong and my faith from. Whenever one goes to church or speak to fellow believers one hears that this person spoke to so and so and he said this and that or they listened to this audio from this great preacher and they were so blessed by it or they watched a crusade on TV etc. Very little do you hear the person actually saying that they prayed this morning and while reading the Word and maybe quoting some scripture they got this revelation or they were confronted by their own sin through the Word of God. Too much do we look at others who appear on TV, read books of famous preachers, buy audio for some great sermon and very little do we actually look at the Word for our answers and life guidance of how to live and how to live according to what Jesus wants us to live. I am not saying that these things are wrong and one should never watch, read or listen to it, but I do think as a Christian our source (99%) of what we know, what guides us, what motivates us, what convicts us of sin in our lives, should be coming from our daily devotion with God through His Word and not from another source.
Romans 3:23 says: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”. We as people are not perfect and will never be while on earth. We can however continue to grow towards being Christ like. Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Nowhere in the Word does it say listen to people. But the whole Bible points towards Jesus who is our saviour and whom we should obey and we get that through the Word.
The Word we can trust. We do not know the people personally on TV, on Audio, who wrote the books. We do not know their personal lives, we do not know how they treat their families, their kids and how they act while driving for example. How can we trust what they say (even though it sounds good to the ear)? When God talks about the body of Christ, His talking about a fellowship where people get together, build each other up through the Word, through prayer. In this fellowship there are people you should know, who you can trust that they are diving into the Word, learning, growing spiritually and have a discerning spirit but even in this fellowship of Christians, we should have our first and final word from God. Within the Body of Christ we are all part of the head which is Christ and we have to listen to Him (not people) and ask the Holy Spirit daily to help us towards Jesus.
I think we as Christians need to answer the following question daily: When we hear somebody preach or talk about something, do we go back to the Word to confirm it or do we just trust whatever people say? And do we get our knowledge/ideas/belief/etc from the Word more than people?
2 Cor 11:13-15 “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works”
In my opinion, trust the Word of God and not some person for your life.
